by Sampson on December 18, 2009

This is the third installment of a five part series on Work From Home Internet Business success. Overall I have been sharing with you the philosophy of the Slight Edge – simple, easy to do, consistent actions that determine whether we succeed at anything in life or not.

To help allow this philosophy work for us instead of against us, (because it is always working whether we are aware of it or not) we have talked about:

In this post we’ll discuss:

Step #3: Harnessing The Power of Habits

Most people take habits for granted. However, every successful person knows that they have keep their habits in check if they are to remain successful.

Answers.com defines a habit as “A recurrent, often unconscious pattern of behavior that is acquired through frequent repetition”. Or “An established disposition of the mind or character”. Simply stated, a habit is something we do without thinking.

There are two kinds of habits: good habits – those that serve you and move towards your goals, and bad habits – those that do not serve you and move you away from your goals. We are all aware that habits exist; it’s just that we tend to see the habits more in others than in ourselves.

Our habits, surprisingly, come from our actions. The way an action turns into a habit is by repeating over and over and over until it becomes automatic. The compounded effect of those habits will either work for you or against you, depending on whether they are habits that serve you – moving you up the success curve or those that don’t – moving you down and out the success curve.

For example, a lot of people have the habit of purchasing almost every Internet Website Marketing product that’s released without actually using them. Every time they want something new.

So you when you discover a habit that does not serve you, how do you change it or get rid of altogether? It is not easy; it takes time and it takes knowing where to focus your energy. Try not to focus on the unwanted habit you want to change. Why? Because the more you focus on it the bigger it grows. The way to accomplish it is to replace the unwanted habit with a habit you do want. And you do it by taking one step at a time. What I call ‘Baby steps’. And being committed to the day-in,  day-out process of acquiring the habit you want.

So let’s say you want to acquire the habit of being consistent with your marketing efforts, e.g. article or video marketing, or whatever form of marketing appeals to you. Do one article a day. And then you can turn this article into video. Once this becomes part of your routine, you’ll realize that it’s easier to write more articles within the same time frame with experience.

It is easy to do and acquire the habits you want, and again, easy not to do and keep the habits you don’t want. But if you don’t do them today, will it kill you? No! But that little error in judgment, repeated over time will get those bad habits ‘stuck’ to you and sooner or later take you down and out of business.
